The Surry County Finance Department carries out the financial policies and procedures of the County. The department handles all financial operations including accounting, payment of invoices, billing, investment, debt issuance, compilation of the annual budget for all County services, and the recording of the County's assets and liabilities. The accounts of the County are maintained in accordance with generally accepted principles of governmental accounting. In addition to preparing the annual financial report, the department provides financial information to internal and external users as well as maintaining the self-insured worker's compensation program.
An audit of the County's financial statements, financial practices, and principles is conducted annually by an outside auditing firm. The finance staff assists the auditors in compiling this information for the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. This audit determines any material weaknesses or discloses any compliance exceptions, if there are any. This audit also discloses the financial position of the County.
